After Nas’ contract with Def Jam expires later this year, Nas will go the independent route with the launch of his label Mass Appeal Records which was co-founded by Peter Bittenbender.
Mass Appeal Records and its sister publication Mass Appeal magazine will focus on new ventures which includes signings of new artists like Detroit rapper Boldy James, 17-year-old New York rapper Bishop Nehru and former XXL Freshman Fashawn.
One of the first releases will be an annual compilation album featuring friends of the brand like Future, Pusha T, Mac Miller and A$AP Mob. Next up will be Nas’ long awaited and much anticipated album The Lost Tapes 2. In addition to that, a posthumous Pimp C album is also set to be released with production coming from modern producers like DJ Mustard and Mike WiLL Made It. Sony RED will handle the distribution for the label.
Says Nas:
“I’m excited to be a part of creating and supporting future careers and legacy artists, promoting love and finding new genius to help the world. I’m going to be as involved as I need to be, but I also want to be respectful of the art and give artists the space they need to grow and become themselves.”
