GQ does pull a surprise every now and then with their cover stories. For their Holiday issue of their Style magazine, they have got Kendrick Lamar and Rick Rubin together for an interesting interview. The two had never met before this.
Rick Rubin interviews the Compton rapper about his writing & recording process, how he came up with the idea for ‘Alright’ featuring Pharrell which came an anthem for the young generation, how he stays true to the lyrics on the song, studying legends in the game, his inspirations, importance of meditation in his life, being a huge Prince fan and much more. Right after the chat, the two hit the studio to record something together.
The interview took place at Rick Rubin’s Shangri La Studios in Malibu, California. Bob Dylan and the Band lived here back in the 1970s and Dylan’s old tour bus serves as an auxiliary studio at the property. Kanye West recorded much of Yeezus and The Life of Pablo albums here.
