Tupac Shakur Estate Opens Pop Up Cafe ‘Powamekka’ Inspired By Rapper in NYC

 

The Tupac Shakur estate has announced the opening of the Pop Up cafe named Powamekka in New York City, which is inspired by life of the rapper.

About twenty years ago, Tupac had envisioned opening of a concept restaurant before his untimely death in 1996. Powamekka Café will offer the food he loved — meatloaf, gumbo and the like, from April 7 to April 9. Sweet Chick restaurant in Manhattan’s Lower East Side will be transformed into a unique experience consisting photos of his childhood, music, poetry, memorabilia and more, according to the press release. The opening will coincide with the rapper’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Friday.

The concept of the restaurant where people could come to “escape the worldz cold reality” was found in handwritten text in his notebook. The Estate of Tupac Shakur and Universal Music Group’s merchandise company Bravado will also be offering limited edition apparel and merchandise at cafe, located at 178 Ludlow St. in New York. Tom Whalley, trustee of The Estate of Tupac Shakur, said in the press release, “Tupac’s creative vision was limitless. He was constantly working on ideas and plans that reached far beyond music and film. One of the things he was extremely passionate about was opening a restaurant; he even sketched out plans and a concept for a menu. We are proud to bring Tupac’s Powamekka Café to life.”
