ll canibus 500x500

The Christmas in Brooklyn event presented by WBLS and HOT 97 is currently going down at the Barclays Center featuring performances by Run DMC, LL Cool J, DJ Z-Trip, Lecrae, K. Michelle and Diggy.

But moments ago, something rare and legendary happened when LL took the stage. Apart from bringing out Raekwon and Troy Ave as special guests, he shocked the live audience by inviting his old time rival Canibus. The duo performed the controversial track ‘4, 3, 2, 1′ together, the same track which ignited a beef between the two MCs back in 1997.

If you’re not sure about the history behind their beef, here’s a brief rundown:

On the song, Canibus rapped the following lines “L, is that mic on your arm? Let me borrow that.” which was a reference to LL’s microphone tattoo. But the Queens rapper took offense to it and hit back at Canibus on the same song. Before the song was officially released, LL asked Canibus to change his verse and he agreed. In return, LL promised to change his verse too but the version that came out featured LL’s original verse where he was dissing Canibus.

People weren’t sure what really happened behind the scenes but a heavy beef ensued with Canibus dropping a diss song ‘Second Round K.O.’ and LL coming back at him with ‘The Ripper Strikes Back’ and ‘Back Where I Belong’.

Tonight was a rare moment in history and Pete Rock captured a few seconds of that for us. Watch the footage below.

Not many may be aware of Larry Smith but the Queens musician was responsible for laying down sounds for some of the earliest mainstream Hip-Hop albums. The legendary producer passed away last night.

Larry was born in 1951 and co-produced Run DMC’s first two albums — Run-D.M.C. (1984) and King of Rock (1985). DJ Premier ranks Larry as a top 5 producer dead or alive while Run DMC’s Darryl “DMC” McDaniels called him “Rick Rubin before Rick Rubin.”

The exact reason for his death is unknown but in November 2007, Smith suffered a stroke which left him unable to speak. The news of his passing was confirmed by Combat Jack and Rev Run. Rest in peace.

Bobby Shmurda has found the wrong side of law again.

The ‘Hot N*gga’ hitmaker was arrested by New York City police last night along with several others. Kati Cornell, director of public information in the office of the city’s special narcotics prosecutor has confirmed to Wondering Sound that the arrests were “result of a long-term investigation” and that her “office has a sealed indictment against a number of individuals.”

She has also revealed that the investigation involved some violent incidents as well as narcotics trafficking.

Karen Civil reports that along with Bobby, members of his GS9 gang and Epic Records executive Sha Money XL were also arrested.

UPDATE: A video has surfaced which shows Rowdy Rebel being detained. Hit the jump.

UPDATE 2: Sha Money XL has confirmed that he was not arrested and has released the following statement:

“I was not arrested. They held me until they searched the studio then let me go. I signed these kids to give them a better way in life not to be dragged down by the media and gunned down by the 40 cops that raided the studio and pointed guns at me for working my job. You have no idea how this makes me feel or look when I’m one of the only few black men signing black artist from the streets and giving them a chance to do better in life.”

Bobby is now facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder, assault in the first degree, possession of weapons, intent to sell and possession of narcotics and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree on two counts. He is facing up to 25 years on the conspiracy charges and up to 15 years on each of the weapons charges. The bail has been set at $2 million.

Narcotics prosecutor says rapper Rowdy Rebel was involved in a shooting and later performed at Barclays center in the same clothes. The whole GS9 group was busted with 21 guns (pictured below).

wale announces festivus mixtape with a trak 500x267

The wait for The Album About Nothing has been difficult for us fans who want to hear more from Wale. Towards the end of the year, Hip-Hop releases like 2014 Forest Hills Drive and The Pinkprint might have taken some attention away from the MMG rapper and judging by this announcement and the video to go along with it, he is fully aware.

Wale has announced that in just 5 days, we’ll hear a mixtape with A-Trak through Complex to hold us down until the release of his LP. The tape will be titled Festivus which is a reference to a 1997 episode of Seinfeld. I like that we’re seeing random surprise announcements from rappers with short notice to their projects, exciting!

Hit the jump for the official trailer.

hopsin girlfriend 500x500

Is Hopsin saying a bye to Rap?

If his latest Facebook post is to be taken as a serious one, that is correct. The critically acclaimed Funk Volume rapper went on his FB account a few hours ago and told his fans that he has realized that the Rap game isn’t for him and he will be moving to Australia to venture into other areas. It’s interesting to note that his girlfriend Alyce (pictured above) is a 24 year old Australian Makeup artist.

Says Hopsin:

I just wanted to take time out to say I appreciate all of u who have supported my music over these past few years. A Lot of u have told me stories about how I have changed your life. You too have changed mine in ways that u can never imagine. Unfortunately, tonight is the night that I am actually moving away to Australia. Over the past couple years I have come to conclusion that this profession just isn’t for me, so im going to venture out into new areas of life. I will always be an MC at heart, but this rap stuff just isn’t for me. I hope Youguys can respect it. I’ve signed over my half of the funk volume label to my business partner Dame. I also wished Swizzz, Dizzy Wright and Jarren Benton good luck in their careers. Thank u all! I’m out.

Sincerely,

Marcus Jamal Hopson aka “Hopsin”
