Pharrell Files Lawsuit Against will.i.am For Taking Legal Action Against Him

Welp, Pharrell is definitely not playing around. He’s obviously unhappy about will.i.am taking legal action against him for the use of his ‘i am OTHER’ brand name and he’s hit back in the form of a proper lawsuit against will.

A few days ago, will filed a notice of opposition over Pharrell’s i am OTHER brand and sent him a a cease and desist letter informing P that he owns the rights to all things with an “I Am” element. Now Pharrell has filed a lawsuit in a federal court in New York asking the judge to stop will from stopping him. TMZ reports that in the documents filed in the court, Pharrell has argued that they are each using “I Am” in completely different ways and asked for written permission to continue using the “I Am Other” mark.

Pharrell says Will is using the “I Am” is a Seussian way — as a playfull riff on his own name — and to hammer home his point, he quotes from Green Eggs and Ham:

“Sam I am
I am Sam
I am Sam
Sam I am”

Pharrell continues in his suit, “In contrast, the I Am Other mark means ‘I am something else,’ leaving what that ‘else’ is to the imagination of the consumer. It certainly does not mean ‘I am Will.'”
