They were rooting for him and it happened. Chance The Rapper has won the GRAMMY Award for “Best New Artist” at the 59th Annual ceremony tonight in L.A.
Chance beat other strong contenders for the award: Kelsea Ballerini, Anderson .Paak, Maren Morris, and the Chainsmokers. While accepting the award, Chance shouted: “I know that people think that independence means you do it by yourself, but independence means freedom.”
The Chicago rapper’s Coloring Book (an Apple Music exclusive) was the first streaming-only album to chart on the Billboard 200 last year. He is now the first unsigned artist in history to win this award. Watch his acceptance speech below.
