Lil Nas X Admits to Being A Barb, Proposes Collab; Nicki Minaj Responds

After suppressing it for a long time, Lil Nas X finally admitted that he used to be a “barb” which is a term for Nicki Minaj’s hardcore fanbase.

Before ‘Old Town Road’ became a big worldwide smash, breaking the record for longest-running No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming the fastest song to be certified Diamond, Lil Nas X used to run a fairly popular Twitter account by the name of @NasMaraj where he would post memes and engagement baits all the time. But when the song blew up, he changed the handle to @LilNasX and tried to deny his affiliation with Nicki’s fanbase. Even his record label tried their best to not promote that piece of info online.

On Tuesday (June 16), Nas X admitted that he was indeed a huge fan of Nicki Minaj, but kept it a secret because everyone would have assumed that he was gay, something that he was not ready to reveal at the time. “I didn’t want people to know I was gay tbh,” the Grammy-winning rapper tweeted by way of explaining why he kept his Nicki stanning a secret before he came out last year.

When a fan responded that “Being a barb don’t make you gay,” the rapper-singer agreed and implied that he did, in fact, run a fan page: “It don’t but people will assume if you had an entire fan page dedicated to nicki u are gay. and the rap/music industry ain’t exactly built or accepting of gay men yet.”

Lil Nas X then proposed a collab to the Young Money Rapper. Nicki, who is currently promoting her ‘TROLLZ‘ single with Tekashi 6ix9ine, caught a wind of his tweets and tweeted him. “It was a bit of a sting when you denied being a barb, but I understand. Congratulations on building up your confidence to speak your truth,” she said.

Nas X then replied to her, explaining further why he tried to keep his fandom a secret. “@NICKIMINAJ the generous queen, i love u. and i’m sorry i did that in a time where u were already getting so much bandwagon hate,” he tweeted in response. “i felt so bad, hoping u wouldn’t see my denial. i was just so afraid of people finding out about me and losing everything before i even got a chance.”
