Hip Hop N More Interviews Alexander Dreamer

Alexander Dreamer released his debut album Dancing With The Devil last week and received positive response from listeners. It is definitely one of my favorite projects out right now. I recently had a chance to chat with the talented 20 year producer-rapper from Columbus, Ohio about his start in the game, equipment he uses for his production, influences, future plans and more. Get to know him better below because this guy is the future.

For those you don’t know, tell us something about yourself and your start in the music game.

My name is Jalen Ramsaw, better known as Alexander Dreamer and I am a 20-year-old Hip-Hop artist. I started making music when I was around 12 but it became a lot more serious recently. When I graduated from high school I was fortunate enough to get connected with my current management based out of NYC. Sometimes I feel like “Dancing With The Devil” is my true start.

Who are some of your influences?

Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Drake are a couple influences to name a few. I’m also heavily inspired by other genres of music and I try to make that present in the records I make.

You recently released your debut album Dancing With the Devil. How will you describe the overall sound of the project in just a few sentences?

Dancing With The Devil is an emotional adventure through youth. There are a lot of horns and strings to convey that emotion yet just enough 808’s and Kick drums to keep it Hip-hop.

How long did it take for you to record the whole album?

The album took me around a year to record in its entirety. A lot of the records on this project required some living in order to fully complete. Diving into the production of my next project right now though.

What equipment do you use to produce and record your music?

I’m currently using Native Instruments Maschine the most. It’s a really fast tool to get the ideas out of my head and into the speakers. I have a very modest set up though, nothing any other aspiring musician wouldn’t have access to.

How has the response been to the album?

I’ve been getting a lot of positive feedback on the album so far. I’ve just been trying to be open to criticism because the ultimate goal is to be the best that I can be. I’m excited about the next project. Hopefully very soon I’ll have new material to share with everyone.

Great. How important do you think the blogs and other online media outlets are these days to market one’s music?

I think online media outlets have done wonders for my career. I’ve noticed a couple people from my hometown hesitant to support me and my music until they noticed my name next to sites like yours, XXL, or Vibe magazine. I think the blogs are still an extremely respected source for new content and music.

You’re not just a rapper; you produce all your material yourself. Who is your favorite rapper-producer ever?

Kanye west. Hands down. Late Registration is one of my favorite rap albums of all time. I think Kanye gave the world a real gem with that one Production wise, I’m most impressed by Noah “40” Shebib. He seems to create really powerful music without ever overdoing the textures or adding to much clutter. He’s the man.

What are your immediate future plans?

Right now I’m focused on improving my live shows and creating new music. Hopefully I’ll make new fans and see them on the road soon!
