Hello, everyone! Here we go again with yet another edition of Saturday Spotlight and this week we’re showing love to not four, not five but a total of six fresh, new artists who have caught our eye recently. Their names are Turna, Tommy Swisher, Bobby Creekwater, Javon Johnson, SB and Mir Fontane. Enjoy!
Remember: We take submissions for this series. Please see guidelines here.
Turna
Turna has been delivering new material for weeks consistently now and this past week was no exception. Just days ago he released ‘Lost Files’ produced by Deaf and by no means is this something to overlook. Considering the fact that you probably haven’t heard of him, Turna boasts a style reminiscent of Drake when he brags which is something to be proud of. Turn up you speakers when you bump this.
Tommy Swisher
Next up is Tommy Swisher with his new Int’l Campaign-produced track by the name of ‘Rockstars’. Despite the name of the song, by no means is he abandoning Hip-Hop. The combination of a Rockstar attitude and persona and some dark Hip-Hop production makes for an interesting sound that will keep you captivated. Check it out below.
Bobby Creekwater
Third up is Bobby Creekwater who hails from Atlanta. Bobby just launched Energy7, a new label with the aim of continuing Motown’s legacy. He admits that a lot of ATL rappers have seen success but reminds us that “there’s more to (his) city than what the world is seeing.” Here, he links up with Chan J on ‘Know About Me’, the first single from Crown Affairs. Listen below.
Javon Johnson
Next up is Javon “X” Johnson with a brand new mixtape titled Hermann Park. The title of the project is named after the park where he went to start rhyming when he became homeless years ago and where, when he was younger, his mother would take him to “do ‘family’ sh*t.” The personal title is fitting because of how open he is throughout the tape, a perfect introduction. Stream below via Pigeoes and Planes.
SB
SB (also known as SoulBrotha) comes through with a controversial and powerful new piece of music. Try not to be moved as he spits about feeling like the best MC, the disadvantages of being black, struggles of being a black woman and a whole lot more. SB is the voice of the voiceless on ‘The Immigrant’s Purpose’, you don’t want to miss out on this one.
Mir Fontane
Our last pick is Mir Fontane who releases an ode to Steph Curry, the 2015 MVP. The song features a killer, catchy hook and engaging bar after engaging bar, making for a special song at the perfect time for you to blast with game one of the NBA finals over. Roca Beats laces Mir up with a perfect instrumental for ‘Steph Curry (The Side)’. Listen below.
