DJ Mustard, a solidified legend from the LA area, recently got into a spat on X with rivals-by-association, DJ Akademiks and Drake. Why you ask? Well, it’s as simple as Akademiks posting a tweet revealing first week sales for DJ Mustard’s latest album, Faith of a Mustard Seed.
Now this wouldn’t really be a big deal, as journalists cover sales all the time differently and across different mediums. Except in this case, DJ Mustard sensed something wrong.

For anyone that has followed the Drake-Kendrick back and forth in an all out battle with diss records, it seems to be clear as day that Akademiks had a side picked very early on in the feud. Arguably, Akademiks’ support for Drake has extended post-beef, with Akademiks constantly reporting pro-Drake news with as much enthusiasm as the times he repeatedly reported jabs at Kendrick and crew, from almost anyone and everywhere.
Since Mustard produced Kendrick‘s final blow in the battle, ‘Not Like Us,’ it is only natural to assume that a ‘rival’ would want to bring him down — and it seems to be the exact assumption Mustard made. Safe to say he wasn’t happy.

What followed was a barrage of tweets that Mustard claimed he made whilst at his son’s basketball game, while Akademiks continued with the jabs and back ‘n’ forth’s across his social media profiles. Now, to be fair, while Mustard claims that album sales are a form of white supremacy, fact is that he did also repost a tweet about album sales. But when Akademiks did it, ill intent was assumed automatically, and almost as automatically, things were said right back.

Mustard even claimed that Drake got Gordo to drop his project around the same time as Mustard as some sort of strategic move. Now whether the claim is true or not, one must ask themselves — can you really blame Mustard though? He seemed to be perfectly satisfied and grateful for having sold 18K units for a project he not only produced on but also rapped on before Akademiks commented on it. And it is clear that he’s in the hip hop history books forever with ‘Not Like Us’, so, who really is in the right here? We’ll let you decide for yourself!
