Universal Music Group Responds To Drake’s Appeal Regarding ‘Not Like Us’

Universal Music Group Responds To Drake’s Appeal Regarding ‘Not Like Us’

Kendrick Lamar‘s ‘Not Like Us‘ has arguably become an all time classic diss record. Not only because of Kendrick’s presentation, but also because it is rather rare for a song to receive this much attention that’s inevitably amplified by an ongoing lawsuit.

While Drake continues to seek ‘justice,’ he has inadvertently increased the longevity of the diss record aimed at him. Just recently, the rapper got a reply from UMG over ‘Not Like Us’ defamation suit, which was earlier dismissed. Yet, Drake chose to appeal the decision and has now invited more replies from the UMG side.

Safe to say, UMG isn’t mincing words. In their latest response to Drake’s legal pursuit, the label basically implied that it is hypocritical of Drake to first use the UMG platform to target Kendrick, only to backtrack and change the rules later. Here’s an excerpt from the UMG submission:

“Although Drake had used UMG’s platform to attack Lamar in equally incendiary terms, he now claims UMG defamed him by releasing the recording, that the track violates N.Y. Penal Law, and that UMG’s promotion of it violated N.Y. General Business Law (GBL),” the filing reads.

“[Drake] seeks to strip words from their context and deem them actionable defamation if anyone, anywhere, might treat them as factual,” it continues. “That is not the law, and Drake’s view would critically undermine a highly creative art form built on exaggeration, insult, and wordplay. Drake’s Penal Law and GBL arguments fare no better. This Court should affirm the dismissal.”

Seems like this tirade isn’t ending anytime soon. What do you think?
