We posted a quote from our interview with Governor where he exclusively told us the title of his third studio album and the first on 50 Cent’s just established label G-Note Records. The singer is pushing for a Summer release for A Touch Of Magic but that’s not all he revealed in his first interview since the new deal. We discussed his Grand Hustle departure, thoughts on 50 Cent’s upcoming album, relationship with the G-Note Records’ head and the customary Prince Vs. Michael Jackson debate.
HHNM: Whatās up Sir. Thanks for taking the time out for us. First things first, please introduce yourself to our readers.
Governor: Hello to all Hip Hop N More readers. I’m Governor, from the state of Virginia, representing Hip Hop/Soul music and G-Note records.
HHNM: So what are you up to these days?
Governor: Right now, I’m focused on finishing the album that we’re about to put out on G-Note called “A Touch of Magic”.
HHNM: Great. Iāve had this question in mind for a long time and I know our readers would be interested as well: When did you leave Grand Hustle and why?
Governor: The reason I left Grand Hustle was because it just wasn’t good timing. Tip was coming into his own as an artist at that time. He really didn’t have time or energy to properly push my project. I think he liked the music but I’m sure Atlantic gave him a nice lil’ check for taking on the project. So, at the end of the day, the focus of that project was never about me, it was about the huge egos and brands attached. I can remember one day talking to T.I. on the phone….he said “Gov, you are just not going to have some of the advantages and amenities that other artists have!” After that, the bell rang.
HHNM: I see. So tell us something about your new situation with 50 Centās G-Note Records.
Governor: The new situation is an honor in itself. 50 and I grew up together in this music, so to speak. I hate to even give names sometimes dealing with my story because I hate to even give some of the haters light by mentioning their names. Regardless of any of that, it was a blessing to be able to re-connect to 50. We always shared a genuine respect for each others music and destiny had it so that we end up being able to work with each other again. The sweet thing about this situation on G-Note is that its an independent label, with major money behind it. Its not like being on a major for me. On G-Note, I don’t have to deal with certain issues that come along with being attached to a major. I actually talk to the owner of the company, ride in the same vehicle on the way to the airport. I have his telephone number and he actually answers….I don’t have the pressure of selling 2 million records to actually make a profit. (even though selling 2 million copies would be nice!)
HHNM: That sounds good. You have just released two new tracks āHere We Go Againā and āWish Me Luckā, both featuring 50 Cent which have been received very well by the listeners. Do you have more music coming up and can we expect to hear more collaborations with 50?
Governor: The first two or three collaborations was to allow people to get used to a particular feel and sound, while being connected to one of the most successful rappers on earth. Now, we are focusing on releasing songs that showcase that sound, speaking of myself as a solo artist.
HHNM: How is your relationship with Fif? Does he give you a lot of advice?
Governor: Fif has never been the type to be highly opinionated or bossy with his opinion with me. Every now and then, he’ll drop a jewel or two but I think he expects everybody to hold their own.
HHNM: Speaking of the boss, how is his new album coming along? 50 mentioned a few days ago that heās almost done with it. Have you heard any of it? What can you tell us?
Governor: Ive heard some of 50’s new music. Im a fan, that’s all I can say! It’s back to the 50 that could say certain things on a track that other rappers couldn’t because with him it was actually believable. His vibe, the tone of his voice, the cocky nature with the harsh realities in the lyrics, thatās 50 Cent!
HHNM: I gotta tell you this: āDo You Think About Meā is one of favorite tracks from 50ās āBefore I Self Destructā and similarly āKill Itā from Banksā āHunger For More 2ā, both joints featuring vocals by you. How much contribution did you have in both towards the finished product?
Governor: Thanks. As far as the Banks record, he sent it to me and I recorded it in VA. 50 and I recorded both of the records we did in the studio together.
HHNM: When can we expect your new album to come out? And do you have a title for it yet?
Governor: As far as I know, we are looking towards summer to release the album, “A Touch of Magic”. Trust me I canāt wait.
HHNM: We can’t wait either. Okay, one last question & this is something we ask everybody we interview here at Hip Hop N More: Prince or Michael Jackson and why?
Governor: To tell the truth if I had a choice between working with Prince or Michael, I think I would choose to create music with Prince, but ride to the bank with Mike. In my opinion Prince’s artistry was on a different level even though Mike sold more records. I love the music of both artists though, donāt get it twisted.
HHNM: Great. If you have any message for our readers or any shout-outs, please go ahead. Also tell your fans how they can get in touch with you.
