YOUNG JEEZY SIGNS FREDDIE GIBBS TO HIS CTE LABEL
THE PRIDE OF GARY JOINS THE SNOWMAN IN GANGSTER SOLIDARITY
The ink is drying on the widely rumored agreement between Gary, Indiana lyricist Freddie Gibbs and Atlanta-based CTE Records, the imprint helmed by platinum-selling artist, Young Jeezy. The development is the latest notch in the belt of the upwardly mobile MC whose recent winning streak includes a XXL Freshman Top 10 nod and critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, Spin, Pitchfork, NPR, The New Yorker, and many more.
Jeezy drew national media attention to Atlanta in the early 2000s where it has remained affixed ever since when he dropped his certified-platinum album on Def Jam, Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101 in 2005. The album immediately set a regional precedent and sparked a landslide of releases from hundreds of other artists, but Jeezy has remained a fixture of urban television and radio and one of southern rap’s most outspoken proponents.
Internet whispers of collaboration between the Gibbs and Jeezy began bubbling to the surface in early 2011. With the Str8 Killa EP in stores, a long string of stunning mixtapes, and numerous guest appearances, Freddie has been on the national radar, but The Snowman’s suspicions that Gibbs represented the new vanguard of lyricism in gangster rap were substantiated when he witnessed his recent performance on Last Call with Carson Daly. The deal was sealed, and the two plan to move forward with the release of Gibb’s next mixtape, A Cold Day In Hell later this summer. It’s going to be a hot one.
