Together with premiere of his new song & video, ‘The Funeral‘, 50 Cent also sat with Forbes to discuss his departure from Shady/Aftermath/Interscope after 12 successful years and his new deal with Caroline/Capitol/UMG.
50 explains why he was able to leave Interscope despite the fact that he still owed them a 5th album under the original contract, revealing that major reason was his good relationships with Dr. Dre and Eminem. His new deal now gives him lots of freedom to dictate releases on his own terms.
50 has also compared his new deal with Birdman’s Cash Money Records saying that it’s “structured similarly to Cash Money’s arrangement, which in which Bryan “Birdman” Williams’ label doles out a mere 7% of wholesale per album to Universal in exchange for distribution and support.”
Another big reason the split between 50 Cent and Shady/Aftermath/Interscope has been amicable is that all the labels involved have the same parent company (“If it wasn’t all under the Universal umbrella, it wouldn’t work,” 50 admits).
Says 50:
“I’m a special case and situation. It’s also because of the leverage of having the strong relationships with Eminem and Dr. Dre. They don’t want to me to be uncomfortable. They value our friendship to the point that they would never want [to jeopardize] it over that little bit of money.”
