Earlier today, NY rapper Troy Ave trended globally on Twitter, perhaps for the first time but the reason wasn’t excellence of his music.
Reports began to spread on social media that Troy had just sold 4300 copies of his new album Major Without A Deal in the first week out of which physical copies (CDs) accounted for only 30 in number. While the stats were accurate, most did not understand the reason why this happened.
Billboard explained that the album was released on a Friday on June 5th vis BSB Records/Empire Distribution but only digitally which gave it just three days at retail since Soundscan counts sales till Sunday. This was done to give access of the album to the fans early before Troy’s appearance at Hot 97 Summer Jam on Sunday, June 7. The physical edition of the album hit stores 4 days laterĀ on June 9.
The 30 CDs stat which everybody made fun of was actually a number generated due to small mom & pops stores selling the physical edition early by ignoring the actual street date of June 9th. What prompted many fans to clown the rapper was the fact that Troy had bragged about his album “selling the f*ck out in Best Buy” on the day of physical release.

Troy did react to all the hype on Twitter a little while ago in a light manner by telling all his haters how much money he has made from the album campaign:
