YG has linked with Interscope Records in a big way by signing a multi million dollar joint venture for his label 4Hunnid Records.
The deal is spearheaded by Joie Manda, a former Def Jam executive and current president of urban music at Interscope Geffen A&M. YG worked with Joie when latter was with Def Jam Records. YG released two albums with Def Jam — My Krazy Life and Still Brazy but will now make his move to West Coast based Interscope Records, reports Billboard.
Says YG: “After the album came out and had its success, Joie was really behind our whole movement and everything we had going on. [Joie] knew what I did, who I had something to do with. With the album being a classic, [DJ] Mustard popping off, Ty [Dolla $ign] popping off ’cause we all from the same camp, he felt like I could have my own label and do the same things that we did for ourselves and other artists.”
Manda adds, “I’ve gotten to know YG and his team over the past few years and have full belief in their vision to build a label that moves the culture.”
The rapper reveals that he along with DJ Mustard and Ty Dolla Sign were earlier in talks with Capitol Records for a group deal but it did not work out so they all went their separate ways. But he will continue to work with the two without label politics getting in between.
Here are some quotes from his interview with Billboard:
Do you envision 4Hunnid Records being a predominantly West Coast roster?
Starting off, we for sure gonna have West Coast artists because weāre West Coast-based label. Before the world believes in you, you gonā have to pop some shit off from your section and your culture. Then when that happens, we gonā be able to go get who we want from where ever and see where they from but Iām really trying to pop off someone from my side first.
Now does this mean you have your own office at Interscope Records?
Nah, we really aināt got an office at Interscope. We donāt need an office ācause we never there. We work from the road, the crib, at the studio.
