A couple of big albums hit stores this week, including the Hamilton mixtape, Childish Gambino’s Awaken, My Love! and John Legend’s Darkness And Light but who going to own the charts?
The Hamilton mixtape, featuring music from and inspired by popular musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is set to move 190-210k copies in the first week (170-180k pure albums) and debut at number 1 on the Billboard 200 next week. These are unexpected numbers, despite the fact that the album features many A-listers like Nas, Sia, Kelly Clarkson, Usher, Wiz Khalifa, Chance The Rapper and Ashanti & Ja Rule to name a few.
Childish Gambino’s experimental new album Awaken, My Love! which mostly features Jazz and Funk sounds, is projected to move 85-95k copies in the first week (70-80k pure sales) according to HDD. This should be good enough for a top 5 debut. John Legend, on the other hand, is looking at somewhere near 35-40k.
