Today marks the 23rd anniversary of Raekwon’s classic debut album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx which is commonly referred to as The Purple Tape. The album was available on cassette, which was manufactured in a purple colored casing, hence its “Purple Tape” nickname.
Pusha T called Daytona his “purple tape” on the song ‘The Games We Play‘ from the album so it’s only right that the G.O.O.D. Music president spoke on exactly how it inspired him. Jayson Rodriguez of VEVO took Pusha to Stapleton Houses on Staten Island to hang out with local people and explain the importance of The Chef’s album.
“This is the best rendition [of The Purple Tape] I could’ve tried. The inspiration and feeling was something we were trying to harness,” said Pusha while walking around the streets. Watch it below.
