Welcome back to yet another edition of Saturday Spotlight.
2020 has been a blessing and a curse for musicians across the globe. COVID-19 has taken away loved ones, jobs, and financial stability. We question if we’ll ever reach normalcy again: going to movie theaters, restaurants, bars, and even handshakes. Our daily routines are flipped upside down, our options have been diminished and we’re, for the most part, stuck indoors watching the Sopranos in its entirety for the hundredth time. For artists, this has become a time of creation and reassessment. Whether you’re curating a new venture into the vigorous world of Rap music, or you’re reinventing your craft — this has been the year of finding your inner artiste.
Over the last six weeks, we’ve seen many styles and approaches to Hip-Hop from hard-hitting melodies to iron-mic caliber rhyming that could compete with Masta Killa on his best day. Imagination is the weapon with the sharpest precision and the highest accuracy when it comes to grinding to the top. The winners from the previous weeks have shown unique ways to communicate with their fans and audience, leaving room to evolve their craft. During the pandemic, these creators have capitalized on any pitfalls they might’ve faced, turning lemons into a Cuban Linx. The question is: who’s next?
Deezy Da Duce
Texas has birthed some of the most legendary rap acts to ever grace Hip-Hop. From the heavy influence of DJ Screw to UGK, to more recently — Travis Scott — you’re bound to find an unlimited pool of talent. Gracing us from Beaumont is Deezy Da Duce, the upcoming emcee who’s incendiary delivery scorches his verses bar after bar like a pack of C4. On his latest single, “Cold Case” featuring Houston legend Bun B, Deezy sets the tone with complete intensity, carefully picking apart rappers with complete mastery and confidence.
Bun B, however, doesn’t slump behind catapulting off of Deezy’s energy and flow with the essence only a veteran could bring to the table. The track is produced by Deezy’s ongoing collaborator, Chase Raccs. Not only is Deezy a threat, but he’s also the real deal. “Bitch, Stop Playing Wit Me…” is the upcoming project from Deezy and Chase, due to release on December 18th. J.Street
2020 has been one of the most musically defining years in the Detroit scene with booming rap acts like Payroll Giovanni, Drego and Beno, Boldy James, and Peezy taking over the whole state of Michigan. Introducing next is J. Street, a rapper, producer, and engineer whose previous work includes Bizarre from D-12 as well as R&B songstress Aliyah Marie. J. Street comes on the scene with his latest single, “Put On” which features Griselda’s very own Boldy James (who also has a prolific year).
Embodying the harrowing streets of Detroit, J. Street captivates with a hook that puts his city on the map. His verses define the hustle, the grit, and grime that comes with getting money in the streets. Boldy James follows up and provides a crushing verse that not only compliments J. Street’s verse but provides chemistry that makes this track a staple in the explosive local rap scene in Detroit. Check out “Put On” featuring Boldy James below:
