Following a couple of weeks of hiatus, welcome back to another edition of Saturday Spotlight. Each week we review submissions from all over the globe, picking the best out of the batch to highlight at the end of the week. If you’re an aspiring rapper, a producer wanting to create a buzz, or a singer looking to expose their talent, Saturday Spotlight is dedicated to discovering the next star. This week, we received over 40 submissions — below are the two picks.
Whether it’s your latest single or a new beat you made, all upcoming artists can submit music to us for Saturday Spotlight on this link.
Daily Bread
Los Angeles rapper MC MURS has joined forces with Atlanta-based electronic producer Daily Bread to create 5-track EP ‘ATL.A.’, a body of work that uniquely combines the mutually shared stories, experiences, and upbringing of these two artists from two very different but also similar worlds. Merging these perspectives, MURS uses his honed skill of lyricism and storytelling to bridge the gap between these two cities, touching upon themes that will relate to inhabitants of both. Gang violence, drugs, and street life are just some of the recurring motifs — but underlying these commonalities are nostalgic elements of home, brotherhood, perseverance, and hope. Daily Bread’s hip-hop production laced with hints of electronic influences are the perfect backdrop to MURS’ vocal illustrations, sonically bringing the energy of their two cities to life.

Wiseman
Independent hip-hop artist from Long Beach California, Wiseman, has an extensive catalogue that demonstrates his love for the 90s hip hop era. With boom-bap beats and a flow reminiscent of hip-hop legends of what many call the golden-era such as Mos Def, Black Thought, and MF Doom, Wiseman channels his creativity into thoughtful hip-hop. Conveying messages of positivity and consciousness, Wiseman’s work comes straight from the heart, with a hard-hitting baritone voice to match.

Through our artist discovery platform Saturday Spotlight, we have discovered some amazing talent in the past including Russ, Ty Dolla Sign, Mez, IDK, Victoria Monét and Trap Beckham to name just a few. In most cases, coverage on HHNM was their first look among media outlets. Find the submission guidelines here.
