Kanye West took a unique approach to the rollout of his latest album The Life of Pablo. After Weeks of exclusivity to TIDAL, the album was also released on other streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify on April 1.
This development happened despite Kanye initially announcing that the album won’t be available anywhere else except TIDAL, where he is a part owner. Since then, the album hit number 1 in its debut week with 94k units moved in the first week. 28k of that were pure album sales from his website while rest were from streaming.
But here’s an interesting stat for this week at Soundscan. According to charts analyst Chart Data, TLOP sold just one copy (yes, 1!) last week.
Billboard 200: #20 @kanyewest, The Life of Pablo 16,764 units [1 album sale |13,320 track sales | 23,146,182 streams]
— chart data (@chartdata) July 11, 2016
Since the album has been primarily treated as a streaming project, it has still managed to move 16,764 units this past week, assuring a top 20 spot on Billboard 200. Of course, we all know that the album is only available for purchase on his official website for a whopping $20 but it’s still an entertaining thought that only 1 copy of the album was sold in the entire week, and the entire United States of America.
