Hip-Hop Listening Increased By Nearly 75% on Spotify in One Year

Hip-Hop has been thriving for decades now and a report in July this year finally proved once and for all that it’s the most dominant genre in the U.S. today.

Spotify is still the biggest streaming platform in the country and the service has today released its official stats which gives us some interesting facts about consumption. Ed Sheeran is the most streamed artist of 2017 globally on the platform, and remains the #1 most streamed artist with 47 million monthly listeners. His latest album ÷ (Divide) was the most streamed album of the year worldwide with 3.1 billion streams while his smash single ‘Shape of You’ became the most streamed track of all time on Spotify, now with over 1.4 billion streams.

But it’s Hip-Hop that is mainly doing the damage across the board. Hip-Hop listening increased a whopping 74% over the past year according to Spotify’s data, despite 2016 itself being a great year for the genre. There are three Hip-Hop/R&B artists in the top 5 most streamed artists list — Drake at #2, The Weeknd at #3 and Kendrick Lamar coming in at #4.

When it comes to albums, Ed Sheeran is number 1 but rest of the 4 spots are occupied by Drake’s More Life, Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN., The Weeknd’s Starboy and Post Malone’s Stoney in that order. The most streamed female artist is Rihanna and she’s achieved it without having an album out this year.
