Childish Gambino’s ‘This is America‘ has attracted a lot of attention since its debut on May 5th following his performance on Saturday Night Live.
The politically conscious video has a lot of hidden meanings, with news ones being decoded everyday by fans and analysts. Billboard is reporting that the song has a good shot at number 1 debut on the Hot 100 chart this week. The song should amass over 50 million U.S. streams in the tracking week, along with over 8 million in radio airplay audience and 60k pure copies sold. The music video has been watched more than 77 million times already.
Compared with the projections for the current chart leader, Drake’s ‘Nice For What’, Gambino’s track has a fair chance of edging out the Toronto superstar. Drizzy has spent last 15 weeks in a row on top of the chart — 11 weeks with ‘God’s Plan’ and 4 weeks with ‘Nice For What’. Both songs are from his next album Scorpion, arriving in June.
Childish Gambino’s highest chart position on Hot 100 so far has been number 12 last year with ‘Redbone’. He sat down with Jimmy Kimmel last night to talk about reaction to his video, performing with Stevie Wonder and more.
