After the massive success of Straight Outta Compton, Dr. Dre has decided to dive further into the film world with a new project, this time based on Marvin Gaye. Dre served as a producer and an inspiration for Straight Outta Compton in 2015 which earned an Oscar nomination for original screenplay.
Dr. Dre is now working on a movie about the late singer Marvin Gaye, Variety reports. This is the first time the estate has approved a film project based on the iconic singer, known for his classic hits like ‘What’s Going On’, ‘Sexual Healing’, and ‘Let’s Get It On’. Previously, there have been multiple attempts to give Gaye the biopic treatment from folks like F. Gary Gray, Cameron Crowe, James Gandolfini, Scott Rudin and more but none have won the estate’s approval. Jamie Foxx landed the rights for a limited series in 2016 but it never got off the ground.
Marvin Gaye, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recipient, shaped the sound of Motown in the 1960s and 70s. He was fatally shot by his father at their L.A. home in 1984 after a physical altercation resulting from a family dispute.
