Every year, the Super Bowl halftime show is always a big deal in music, but this year Hip-Hop has the platform and it feels genuinely special. Dr. Dre, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige and Snoop Dogg will take the stage and to capitalise on the moment, the latter two of that group are both releasing albums tonight. You can watch the trailer for the performance here.
To commemorate the moment for himself, Eminem sat down with Sirius XM’s Sway Calloway to talk about the event. The full interview will be out tomorrow on Shade 45 but tonight, we have some clips.
In the first one, Eminem says the grand stage is “f*cking nerve-racking”. He goes on to say “there’s nothing more final than live TV… if you f*ck up, your f*ck up is there forever.”
In the second clip, he calls fellow halftime performer Kendrick Lamar a top tier lyricist of all time.
In the third clip, he talks about rooting for the L.A. Rams in the game because Matthew Stafford is from Detroit and he feels that’s the closest they’ll get to a ring. “It’s a perfect scenario where I can root for a team that I like because of Matt Stafford and the Detroit connection”.
In the fourth and final clip, he recalls the first time he and Dre discussed the show. “I was trying to envision what Dre might do… I was thinking, like ‘yeah that’s dope that all of us are gonna rap together right?’ and that kind of thing, but I didn’t expect the production to be like this” he admits.
