Welcome back to another edition of Saturday Spotlight. Each week we review submissions from all over the globe, picking the best out of the batch to highlight at the end of the week. If you’re an aspiring rapper, a producer wanting to create a buzz, or a singer looking to expose their talent, the Saturday Spotlight series is dedicated to discovering the next star.
Whether it’s your latest single or a new beat you made, all upcoming artists can submit music to us for Saturday Spotlight on this link.
Yh Sound
‘it is what it is’ is Yh Sound‘s second single off his latest album Ambient Nights, released 18th of February — his first album in five years after Hold The Applause in 2017. ‘it is what it is’ is an impressive display of flow, lyrical ability, and confidence from the young Mississippi artist, who began recording music at the age of 16.
The beat has instant impact, providing a solid trap bedding for Yh Sound to lay into. With the first four bars, Yh Sound pulls listeners into his world: “Lately they wantin’ to know where I been/I got me a chick, I been at the crib/Got no desire for going downtown and sliding on vibes/I’m way too content”.
The confidence in his flow and tone is what makes Yh Sound a stand-out artist. This is clearly someone who has studied the likes of J.I.D., Kendrick Lamar, and even Drake — who Yh Sound mentions later in the song. That being said, it would be a disservice to Yh Sound’s unique delivery to compare him to another artist. His bars are simultaneously satirical and deep — and delivered to near crystal-clear enunciation.
Louie Indigo
Set to release on February 25th, Louie Indigo‘s next single ‘BAD BOY JIGGY’ is the kind of track that is catchy and fun without at all bordering on cringe. With quick flow reminiscent of London drill, Louie Indigo has created a hype-fun track that’s impossible not to bop to.
While we can’t share ‘BAD BOY JIGGY’ yet since it hasn’t released publicly, we will highlight a recent drop of his called ‘Slip N Slide’ where the Singaporean artist is flexing both lyrical ability and flow. The beat perfectly complements his tone and all in all it’s a track that’s sure to get stuck in your head for days to come. Keep an eye out for Louie Indigo’s single on February 25th but until then, listen to ‘Slip N Slide’ below.
Through our artist discovery platform Saturday Spotlight, we have discovered some amazing talent in the past including Russ, Ty Dolla Sign, Mez, IDK, Victoria Monét and Trap Beckham to name just a few. In most cases, coverage on HHNM was their first look among media outlets. Find the submission guidelines here.
