It was Brandy vs. Monica the last time around which was of course meant more for 70s and 80s babies. On Sunday night, the series appealed to an even older generation as Soul legends Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle went head-to-head for a celebration as part of the VERZUZ series.
The icons went hit for hit in the Swizz Beatz and Timbaland-curated battle that was aired on Instagram Live as well as Apple Music. The two constantly showed love for each other and shared classic stories behind some of the songs. “We are so happy to be together,” LaBelle said while kicking off the event. “We’ve been together for many, many, many years.”
Patti played hits like ‘Stir It Up’, ‘When You’ve Been Blessed’, ‘If You Don’t Know Me By Now’, ‘Love, Need and Want You’, ‘Right Kind of Lover’, ‘Kiss Away the Pain’, ‘You Are My Friend’ and ‘New Attitude’ while Gladys countered with ‘You’re the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me’, ‘On and On’, ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’, ‘Friendship Train’, ‘I’ve Got to Use My Imagination’ and ‘Midnight Train to Georgia’ among others.
