Drake “Black Face” Photographer David Leyes Defends Rapper’s Photoshoot

Pusha T has the internet buzzing with his diss song ‘The Story of Adidon‘ aimed towards his rival Drake, which was a response to the Toronto’s rapper’s song ‘Duppy Freestyle‘. Apart from the allegations that Drake is a deadbeat father who hasn’t accepted his son with a porn star, the story that has created a big controversy is Pusha’s use of artwork for the song.

Kendrick Lamar Shakes Up The Super Bowl With Bold Drake Diss And Surprise Guests
Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl 59 halftime performance was nothing short of legendary, leaving fans buzzing with surprise cameos and bold moments that took his long-running feud with Drake to new heights. Kicking off with an unreleased song snippet and followed by “Squabble Up” from his latest album GNX, Kendrick immediately set the tone for a game-changing performance. Fans eagerly waited to see if Kendrick would play his diss track Not Like Us, especially with Drake's ongoing lawsuit against him and his label for defamation and harassment. Lamar's performance included an unexpected appearance by SZA and a quirky cameo from Serena Williams, along with Samuel L. Jackson’s comedic interruptions, all building the suspense around the Drake drama. In the middle of his performance, Kendrick turned up the heat, looking straight into the camera and directly addressing Drake with his famous lyrics, “I heard you like them young," as fans held their breath. Despite the tension, Kendrick censored himself when it came time to call Drake a "certified lover boy" and avoided saying “pedophile,” which had been widely speculated. Social media lit up with mixed reactions, with some fans mocking the performance as a "mid mashup" and others noting the intense hostility toward Drake. With the hashtag #KendrickBowl trending, it’s clear that Kendrick’s performance was a cultural moment that pushed boundaries—but has he gone too far, or is this just another chapter in hip-hop history? Only time will tell, and Drake has yet to respond.

As it has now been established, the photo is an undoctored image of Drake wearing a black face, taken during a photoshoot with photographer David Leyes. This has obviously offended a lot of people. But as the story is emerging, it has been discovered that the particular photo was originally part of two images stitched together, as posted above.

The photos seem to have been shot sometime in 2008, before Drake’s stardom, in association with the Toronto-based brand Too Black Guys. In the shoot, Drake is seen wearing “Jim Crow Couture” from the label’s 2008 lookbook. According to the brand’s website, their goal is to “represent the black experience in an unapologetic way.”

Some fans have pointed out that Pusha intentionally used only one image to put a negative spin and earn some extra points in the beef, while other fans are deeply offended by the image. Leyes, who originally shot the photos, however seems to be siding with Drake at the moment. He replied to a few fans on his Instagram (which has since been set to private) to explain his side of the story. “Ask Drake.. I captured his idea,” he first said. When another person told him that he could’ve denied doing the possibly offensive shoot, he came to Drizzy’s defense: “hell no!! For sure I took it!! I’m proud to be part of a strong statement made by a black man about the f*cked up culture he is livin in.” See the screenshot of the conversation above.

Pusha T also posted the photo of his song’s artwork on Instagram which seems to have been taken down at Leyes’ request as he was seen on Twitter asking Pusha’s manager Steven Victor to remove it.

Lupe Fiasco has also offered a similar theory that the two photos shot together are somewhat of an artistic impression.

What are your thoughts on the situation? Let us know in the comments section.

UPDATE: Drake has released a statement regarding the black face photos (see it here).
