It was definitely a good idea to bridge the gap between the new generation and the old. Speaking of which, how do you feel about todayās era of hip-hop? Are you a fan of todayās artists?
Raekwon:Ā Iām always gonna be a fan of hip-hop and Iām always gonna be attached to that. Of course the game has changed, we all know that. Thereās a lot of creativity that aināt done at the level that it should be, but as far as the fun side and seeing people make money and seeing these kids come out of these communities getting an opportunity to make some of the biggest money they ever could see, you know Iām for that. Whatever fits your lane. It might not fit mine, but who am I to judge? You out there working. So thatās kind of how I look at whatās going on with hip-hop today. Thereās a lot of cats thatās inspired to do what they want to do and itās all about being a big dreamer, you know?
So what album(s) are you listening to these days?
Honestly man, I listen to everything that you listen to, you know? But I donāt really be sitting down and studying these dudes because I donāt ever want to change what I do. But I do check out what guys got going on and I glance at it. As an artist, we canāt get too caught up in whatās going on because then we start to think that we need to switch certain things. I be listening to a lot of cats thatās doing their thing and like I said, I might like it, but Iām not in love with it like I need to go do that. Iād rather just stay in my own gym, and hit my own bag, and do what I do.
You brought up IceH2O Records earlier. Talk to me about your label and the things youāre working on.
I started a company a while ago [IceH2O Records] and you know itās tough being a CEO and a boss, and working with artists who you know have potential to be stars. But yeah, how can I say thisā¦basically the few artists I do got are in basic training with me, you know what Iām saying? The couple of people that I do got, we have to make some changes, but Iām all about giving them the tools that they need. We got a few tricks up our sleeve and when the timeās right, youāll know about it.
Can we expect a tour when the album drops?
Yeah we got a few things in front of us for real. Iām still working on the Purple Tape Documentary, which is another one of my babies and means a lot to me, because you know we celebrating the 20th anniversary this year. Thereās so much going on, man. So much good Raekwon music and me and my people are just trying to give our fans what theyāre looking for. Itās been a minute since Iāve been out and I never like to rush my projects and I always give y’all 2,000% when it comes to what I believe in. Between this album coming out and still working on the documentary for the 20th anniversary of the Purple Tape ā everythingās good man. Itās going to be a real filled up year for us.
