PARTYNEXTDOOR released his third full length project PARTYNEXTDOOR 3 (P3) this past Friday to a mixed response. The OVO signee from Canada rarely does interviews but he sat down with Rollingstone to discuss the new project, the drama surrounding his relationship with Kehlani, writing the smash ‘Work’ for Rihanna and Drake, focusing on solo music and more.
PND tells the magazine that he regrets how the situation with Kehlani and the triangle involving Kyrie Irving was handled but says there are a lot of details that the general public is not aware of.
On Kehlani episode:
“I regret how it went down. Big time I regret how it went down. I look into people’s eyes, and I know they think I’m a bad guy. There’s a lot of details that people don’t know. I just hope people understand that was a year for him (talking about himself in third person). And I hope everyone has a successful year, and I hope that’s in the past.”
On signing with Drake’s OVO:
“I could go to a label where they don’t know how to handle me and they don’t care,” he reasons. “Or I’ll have a mentor who’s been through it, who knows exactly what I want to mean to my city and what I want to achieve. They know how to handle your emotions. I’ll have freedom and guidance.”
On writing ‘Work’:
“I tried this year to make the party songs,” PND says. “It wasn’t in me.” And that includes Rihanna’s “Work:” “People think that’s a party song. It’s a breakup song. It’s blues. I went from braggadocious to blues. It doesn’t make me happy,” he says. “I’m looking for joy. It’s a moment for Rihanna and Drake. I want to invest time in creating moments for myself.”
On latest album P3 and his mother’s reaction:
“This album is blues — it may push away the pretty people. My mother didn’t listen to my first tape, or my second one,” he notes. “Now I get the texts like, ‘Jahron, this is what I was giving you $50 a month for.’ She can go back and tell her mom, ‘Look what my son made. It sounds like something we grew up to.'”
