Play It On The Radio #21

How y’all doing? We’re ready with the first Play It On The Radio post of the decade. Past few weeks have been quite quiet but we finally see some action in the new year. Got loads of updates this time so sit back and ride.

Kendrick Lamar Shakes Up The Super Bowl With Bold Drake Diss And Surprise Guests
Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl 59 halftime performance was nothing short of legendary, leaving fans buzzing with surprise cameos and bold moments that took his long-running feud with Drake to new heights. Kicking off with an unreleased song snippet and followed by “Squabble Up” from his latest album GNX, Kendrick immediately set the tone for a game-changing performance. Fans eagerly waited to see if Kendrick would play his diss track Not Like Us, especially with Drake's ongoing lawsuit against him and his label for defamation and harassment. Lamar's performance included an unexpected appearance by SZA and a quirky cameo from Serena Williams, along with Samuel L. Jackson’s comedic interruptions, all building the suspense around the Drake drama. In the middle of his performance, Kendrick turned up the heat, looking straight into the camera and directly addressing Drake with his famous lyrics, “I heard you like them young," as fans held their breath. Despite the tension, Kendrick censored himself when it came time to call Drake a "certified lover boy" and avoided saying “pedophile,” which had been widely speculated. Social media lit up with mixed reactions, with some fans mocking the performance as a "mid mashup" and others noting the intense hostility toward Drake. With the hashtag #KendrickBowl trending, it’s clear that Kendrick’s performance was a cultural moment that pushed boundaries—but has he gone too far, or is this just another chapter in hip-hop history? Only time will tell, and Drake has yet to respond.

Rhythmic:

  • Jay-Z’s ‘Empire State Of Mind’ is still holding the crown this week at No.1.
  • He’s followed by IYAZ’ ‘Replay’, Rihanna’s ‘Hard’ and David Guetta’s ‘Sexy Chick’.
  • Young Money’s Bedrock’ lands up in the Top 10 at No.9 for the first time.
  • Timbaland’s ‘Carry Out’ with Justin Timberlake makes a significant jump to No.24. Should have been the first single.
  • New on the charts this week: BEP’s ‘Imma Be’ and Plies’ ‘Medicine’ at No.34 and 38 respectively.

  • ‘Imma Be’ is also the most added song on Rhythmic.
  • It’s followed by: Snoop Dogg’s ‘I Wanna Rock’, Timbaland’s ‘Carry Out’ and Trey Songz’ ‘Say Aah’ in that order.
  • New adds this week: Rihanna – ‘Rude Boy’, Jay-Z – ‘Young Forever’, Alicia Keys – ‘Put It In A Love Song’, Jason DeRulo – ‘In My Head’.
  • Other Info: 50 Cent’s ‘Do You Think About Me’ and Mariah’s ‘Angels Cry’ remix with Ne-Yo officially release on the radio on 19th January.

Urban:

  • Trey Songz is No.1 with ‘I Invented Sex’ for a second week in a row. That’s his 4th straight hit off Ready.
  • He’s trailed by Birdman’s ‘Money To Blow’, Melanie Fiona’s ‘It Kills Me’ and Young Money’s ‘Bedrock’.
  • Robin Thicke’s ‘Sex Therapy’ enters the Top 15 at No.13.
  • Usher’s ‘Hey Daddy’ jumps to No.23, Timbaland’s ‘Say Something’ with Drake to No.26 and Lil Wayne’s ‘On Fire’ to No.33.
  • New on the charts: Jaheim’s ‘Ain’t Leaving Without U’ at No.38 and Roscoe Dash’s ‘All The Way Turnt Up’ at 39. Don’t like this track one bit.
  • Snoop Dogg’s ‘I Wanna Rock’ is the most added song on Urban.
  • They’re followed by Omarion’s ‘Speedin’, Usher’s ‘Hey Daddy’, Timbaland’s ‘Say Something’ and Wale’s ‘Pretty Girls’. The last one is surprising since the single was officially released at least 2 months back. It is surely picking steam now.
  • New adds this week: Skillz – ‘Rap Up 2009’, Teairra Mari – ‘Sponsor’ with Gucci Mane & Soulja Boy, Jay-Z – ‘On To The Next One’, Party Boyz – ‘Flex’, Gucci Mane – ‘Bingo’ feat. Soulja Boy.
