Play It On The Radio #39

The 4th quarter isn’t far from over but the radio is buzzin’ with plenty of new releases on the Rhythmic and Urban side so it makes sense for me to write a new edition of Play It On The Radio. 50 Cent’s ‘My Life‘ is off to a really good start with the single taking the spot for the “most added song” this week. It also debuts at #4 on Billboard Hot Digital Songs with sales of 140k. Without any further delay, please proceed below to know what’s cookin’ on the airwaves.

Kendrick Lamar Shakes Up The Super Bowl With Bold Drake Diss And Surprise Guests
Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl 59 halftime performance was nothing short of legendary, leaving fans buzzing with surprise cameos and bold moments that took his long-running feud with Drake to new heights. Kicking off with an unreleased song snippet and followed by “Squabble Up” from his latest album GNX, Kendrick immediately set the tone for a game-changing performance. Fans eagerly waited to see if Kendrick would play his diss track Not Like Us, especially with Drake's ongoing lawsuit against him and his label for defamation and harassment. Lamar's performance included an unexpected appearance by SZA and a quirky cameo from Serena Williams, along with Samuel L. Jackson’s comedic interruptions, all building the suspense around the Drake drama. In the middle of his performance, Kendrick turned up the heat, looking straight into the camera and directly addressing Drake with his famous lyrics, “I heard you like them young," as fans held their breath. Despite the tension, Kendrick censored himself when it came time to call Drake a "certified lover boy" and avoided saying “pedophile,” which had been widely speculated. Social media lit up with mixed reactions, with some fans mocking the performance as a "mid mashup" and others noting the intense hostility toward Drake. With the hashtag #KendrickBowl trending, it’s clear that Kendrick’s performance was a cultural moment that pushed boundaries—but has he gone too far, or is this just another chapter in hip-hop history? Only time will tell, and Drake has yet to respond.

Previous: #38

RHYTHMIC:

– Rihanna is number 1 on the charts with ‘Diamonds’ while G.O.O.D. Music’s ‘Clique’ is gaining major spins to land on 2. Don’t forget, the song is now platinum.
– Flo Rida’s ‘I Cry’ enters the top 5 this week at 5 and following him is Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Swimming Pools (Drank)’ at 6. The song had a slow start but has definitely grown heavily in audience.
– Bruno Mars’ ‘Locked Out Of Heaven’ is another top gainer, now sitting at #11 this week.
– Lil Wayne’s ‘No Worries’ didn’t turn out to be the smash that some people projected. It crawls to #20 this week.
– Rita Ora’s ‘R.I.P’ takes the biggest fall from 21 to 31 while 50 Cent is the new entry at 50 with just 3 days of airplay.

Top adds:

50 Cent – ‘My Life’ (26)
2 Chainz – ‘I’m Different’ (13)
Joe Budden – ‘She Don’t Put It Down Like You’ (13)
Future – ‘Neva End’ (10)
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – ‘Thrift Shop’ (9)

URBAN:

– King Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Swimming Pools (Drank)’ is number 1 on this format which is a huge achievement for someone who doesn’t make radio-specific songs.
– Juicy J’s ‘Bandz’ however moves up to the 2nd spot and will give tough competition to K. Dot in the coming weeks.
– Lil Wayne’s ‘No Worries’ is doing better on Urban as it enters top 5 at #4 this week.
– Rick Ross’ Diced Pineapples’ featuring Drake is another steady mover this week, jumping to #7.
– T.I.’s ‘Ball’ does move to #13 but with only a gain of 113 spins which means it might slow down in the next week or so until something magical happens. The Kang has struggled to find a hit this era.
– 2 Chainz’ ‘I’m Different’ is the biggest gainer in terms of spins as it jumps to the 15tth spot while Alicia Keys’ ‘Girl On Fire’ takes the biggest drop from 22 to 16.

Top adds:

Slice9 – ‘Another One’ (Feat. Future) (29)
Trinidad James – ‘All Gold Everything’ (7)
A$AP Rocky – ‘F**kin Problems’ (6)
Alicia Keys – ‘Brand New Me’ (6)
Future – ‘Neva End’ (5)
