Lyric Jones is a name which has been bubbling in the underground but she deserves to be right there in the spotlight.
The Boston, MA by way of Atlanta, GA musician can do it all — sing, rap, play drums and even produce. She’s currently working on her new album tiled Closer Than They Appear where she is joined by the one and only Phonte as the executive producer.
Today, Lyric, who impressed many with her Tiny Desk performance recently, is sharing the first single titled ‘Show You How’, enlisting Chicago’s own Vic Mensa on the guest verse. HHNM is happy to premiere the groovy record today.
“The goal with this song is simple, to have fun! It’s been a stressful year and my music as of lately has been serious or very pensive. I wanted to switch it up in all aspects from the genre, personnel, and topic,” Lyic told HHNM over email about the track. “Women’s sexuality has been a hot topic over the past couple months. I feel the beauty with words is HOW you use them. I wanted to have a “sexy” bop but paint the picture while leaving room for imagination and less explicit. Having Vic Mensa on this was a random suggestion I threw at Phonte and worked out perfectly.”
So how did Phonte end up as the EP on her project? “Phonte & I had already been cordial online and linked via mutual music peers for years, we met in Atlanta very briefly nearly a decade ago,” she said. “I reconnected with him last year backstage at Little Brother’s concert in Los Angeles. I was just happy to build with my fave but unbeknownst to me he had on his mind to reach out to me to work on music. After that night and a couple months of building, sharing stories etc., it developed organically into him EP-ing my next project. We both were at the point of “what’s the next step” music wise and us running into each other was literally the stars aligning. Working with Phonte has been on my vision board for over a decade.”
Aside from Vic Mensa, there is also a Little Brother feature as well as production from Focus…& Nameless on Closer Than They Appear. Until that arrives, listen to ‘Show You How’ below or on your favorite service here.
