cd sales 2 500x281

Album sales continue to take a hit as the world transitions to its new favorite way for listening to music: streaming.

Overall album sales in the US in this past chart week (ending July 13) totaled 4.1 million units which is the lowest weekly sum for album sales since SoundScan began tracking data back in 1991. Weekly album sales have been below the 5 million mark in past 12 consecutive weeks. The 5 million mark has only been surpassed in 5 weeks this year, in comparison to 21 weeks at this point last year.

Sia’s new album 1000 Forms Of Fear was able to debut at #1 this week with only 52k copies sold.

Along with album sales dipping low in general because of continued tendency of consumers to favor streaming, low sales can also be attributed to the fact that not many of the world’s top musicians have released projects in the first half of 2014.

UPDATE: Here’s more bad news. This week, the album sales hit a new low. This week’s 3.97-million album sales tally is the smallest weekly sum for album sales since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. It’s also the first time weekly sales have fallen below four million mark in that time span.

Wiz Khalifa third album Blacc Hollywood debuted at #1 this week with sales of just 90,000 copies. Three other albums debuted inside the top 10 on Billboard 200 but averaged only 31,000 units each, showing the downward trend in album sales.

jeremih dont tell em 500x500

Jeremih has the recipe for hit records. His latest single ‘Don’t Tell Em’ featuring YG has been an instant hit since its release a few months ago. Today, it hit the #1 spot on Rhythmic radio, gaining close to 700 spins and thus, fast achieving the status of one of the biggest songs of the year so far.

The singer has been busy finishing his new album Late Nights: The Album which is set for a September 30 release. Some of the guests we can expect on the LP are J. Cole, Juicy J, Flo Rida and Ty Dolla $ign.

On the Urban format side, ScHoolboy Q has returned to the #1 spot with ‘Studio’ featuring BJ The Chicago Kid.

Many agree that YG’s debut album My Krazy Life is one of the best projects of this year so far. The album, produced majorly by DJ Mustard has already spawned hits such as ‘My N*gga’ and ‘Who Do You Love’ but the CTE/Def Jam rapper is now ready for the next round.

He has picked one of the fan favorites, ‘Do It To Ya‘ featuring TeeFlii as the next single from the album which will impact radio the week of September 2nd. We think it’s the right choice but we wonder if radio will be playing the skit at the end!? Ha, of course not.

studio 500x276

Talk about a slow and steady move to the #1 spot. ScHoolboy Q has earned his first chart topper as his BJ The Chicago-featured single ‘Studio’ goes #1 on Urban radio. The song appeared on his debut album Oxymoron and he’s trailed closely by Lil Wayne with ‘Believe Me’ who is only a few spins behind at #2.

Q is now #1 on both formats as Tinashe’s hit ‘2 On’, where he appears as a guest is currently #1 on Rhythmic radio. Congrats to him.

gq jhene 5 500x500

Jhene Aiko’s success story reaches a new high today as she tops the national Urban radio charts with her single ‘The Worst’. She overtook Beyonce’s Partition to the top spot, gaining in excess of 300 spins.

The song appeared on her debut EP on Def Jam, Sail Out which was released last November. I think the label will be smart if they launch her debut album (Souled Out) by utilizing her current buzz.

Chris Brown may be having all sort of legal troubles but on the music front, he continues to score wins. His latest single ‘Loyal’ featuring Lil Wayne and Tyga has topped the Rhythmic radio charts by pushing John Legend’s ‘All Of Me’ to #2. If it wasn’t for his arrests, Chris Breezy would have definitely released his 6th album X by now.
